What Is SURF?
The SURF program is an eight-week residential research initiative running from June 21 to August 16, 2025. It is aimed at increasing diversity in the engineering and science fields while fostering a strong community of future PhD scholars. Participants engage in:
- Research across Stanford’s nine engineering departments.
- Graduate school preparation workshops.
- Coding sessions, industry visits, and excursions around the Bay Area.
- Community-building activities and a research symposium.
- Mentorship opportunities from faculty and peers.

Eligibility Criteria
SURF welcomes applications from a diverse range of students. To apply, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university (in the U.S. or abroad).
- Have completed at least two semesters/three quarters of undergraduate education and have at least one semester remaining after the program ends.
- Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher (exceptions may be made for those with exceptional circumstances).
- Demonstrate a committed interest in pursuing a PhD in engineering (MD, JD, MBA, or other non-research-focused degrees are not eligible).
- Be fully available from June 21 to August 16, 2025 (no summer courses, internships, or other employment).
- Meet specific residency and socioeconomic status requirements if you are an international student:
- First-generation and/or low-socioeconomic status as defined by U.S. Department of Education guidelines.
Application Process and Deadlines
Applications are open from November 1, 2024, to February 1, 2025. Ensure your complete application is submitted by February 1 at 11:59 PM PST. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
Application Materials:
- Resume or CV: Maximum of 3 pages.
- Academic Transcript: Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
- Statement of Purpose: A 1-2 page essay detailing your academic and career goals, research interests, and motivation for pursuing a PhD.
- Two Letters of Recommendation: Preferably from faculty or supervisors familiar with your academic potential.
- Optional Personal History Statement: Highlight unique experiences, values, or challenges that have influenced your academic journey.
