World Press Institute Fellowship 2025 Details

  • Host Country: United States
  • Duration: 9 weeks (Begins and ends in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota)

  • Eligibility: Open to non-U.S. journalists with at least five years of professional journalism experience.

What the Fellowship Offers

The World Press Institute Fellowship is a fully funded program that covers:

  1. Roundtrip Airfare: Transportation to and from the U.S.
  2. Travel within the U.S.: Visits to major cities like Washington, D.C., Chicago, New York City, and San Francisco to meet experts and explore various aspects of journalism.
  3. Accommodation: Comfortable lodging for the duration of the program.
  4. Daily Food Allowance: A modest stipend for meals.

Note: Fellows are responsible for personal expenses such as phone bills, postage, clothing, and equipment.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the WPI Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Have a minimum of five years of full-time journalism experience in print, broadcast, or online media.
  • Be currently employed as a journalist outside the U.S.
  • Demonstrate fluency in both written and spoken English.
  • Show potential for leadership in their field.

Eligible Roles: Journalists in news or editorial roles, photojournalists, editorial cartoonists, columnists, and broadcast producers. Supervisors are eligible if they have five years of prior journalism experience.

Required Documents

Applicants must submit the following:

  1. Work Samples:
    • Print journalists: Three published articles with bylines.
    • Editors: Job descriptions and published samples.
    • Photographers: A portfolio of five published works.
    • Broadcast journalists: Up to 15 minutes of programming.
    • Online journalists: Work equivalent to three articles or 15 minutes of programming.
    • All non-English work samples must include English summaries.
  2. Letters of Recommendation:
    • Three letters, including one from a direct supervisor.
    • Letters must be in English and address the applicant’s qualifications and leadership potential.
  3. Resume/CV: Highlighting journalism experience.
